This Week’s Good Reads

morning-paper2Here’s a short collection of interesting articles from around the web:

1. “Do You Really Want to Minister to Your Homosexual Neighbor?” by Mark Yarhouse

This is just a fantastic challenge. I don’t agree with everything that Dr. Yarhouse says and teaches, we have different philosophies of counseling, but he has a real heart for those with same-sex attraction. Here he gives a real challenge to pastors and churches.

2. “No Longer ‘Mayberry’: A Small Ohio City Fights an Epidemic of Self-Destruction” by Joel Achenbach

A Washington Post piece a small Ohio town not far from where we lived. The topic? Opioid addiction.

3. “People Change: New Research Shows that Personalities Change” by Charles Hodges

Dr. Hodges discusses some new research that reveals with counseling people can change, especially those who experience anxiety. It has often been believed that once a person reaches adulthood their personality is no longer malleable, but the study Dr. Hodges mentions here disproves that. Of course Christians already knew all of this, as Dr. Hodges points out.

4.”The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly about Marijuana’s Health Effects” by CBS News

Here’s the truth about Marijuana’s health risks and benefits: we don’t really know them. Research and study have been highly restricted in the U.S. There are some clear benefits, but there are also some serious suggested risks (like Schizophrenia!). We continue legalize usage across the U.S. without knowledge of the long-term effects.
