Monthly Love: October

OctoberHere’s what I loved in October 2016:

1. The Dynamic Heart in Daily Life: Connecting Christ to Human Experience by Jeremy Pierre

This is a phenomenal work, a sort of theology of human experience. It combines the best of the traditional theology of Biblical Counseling with much needed nuance and clarification on the conceptual and practical issues of counseling. It may turn out to be one of the best books of the year in Biblical Counseling!

2. ACBC Annual Conference

It’s always a joy for me to reconnect with friends, engage in meaningful conversation, and collect some new resources at this annual event. This year was no exception. I especially enjoyed the plenary session discussion from Heath Lambert, Jeremy Pierre, and David Powlison. Good content.

3. All Sons and Daughters

I feel like I lost track of this band for a couple of years, and rediscovered them this month. What a joy to find new music that is poetic, powerful, and invites worship. They have a compelling way with words that strike me at the heart; for example: “I could just hold on to who I am and never let you change me from the inside…but you have called me higher, you have called me deeper;” or “you take brokenness aside and make it beautiful.” Some wonderful songs that I’ve been enjoying this month are: “Great are Your Lord,” “Called Me Higher,” “Brokenness Aside,” “Your Glory/Nothing But the Blood,” and “You are Love & Love Alone.”

4. The Dixons

It was a special treat to have dear friends of ours come up for a weekend visit. We miss those meaningful relationships we developed in Ohio, and sometimes the sorrow of that can be particularly pointed. The joy of getting to spend time with them again, play games, eat meals, and visit was an unbelievable joy this month.

5. Small Group Outing

A few of the couples from our small group got together this month, went out to dinner, and enjoyed a Mercy Me concert. I had such a great time visiting with friends, spending a unique evening out with them, and enjoying simple fellowship. I love these people and am so glad we get to do life together.

6. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 Trailer

My absolute favorite Marvel movie is prepping for its sequel to be released next year. The trailer is simple with not much detail, but it already makes the movie look super fun and exciting!
