Garry Lloyd is one of our Recovery team leaders. He has a great background in overseeing and developing Recovery ministries at different churches. He also has great competency in Biblical Counseling, having been trained by Dr. Jay Adams – the father of the Biblical Counseling movement. We are blessed to have him leading one of our tables. For the last year he has also been overseeing our group session, and for that I am immensely thankful. I wanted to take some time to introduce Garry and hear some of his thoughts on our Recovery ministry. Also, don’t forget to check out our upcoming Recovery Promotional Party!
DD: Why does Cornerstone have a Recovery ministry?
GL: Cornerstone Baptist Church’s tag line is ” a place for everyone”, and that includes those who struggle with their sins, the sins of others, and the world. Many churches portray the opposite: well dressed people who have everything together when in fact we are all sinners in need of a savior. The recovery program got started when Pastor Terry O’Brien approached my wife and I about starting a ministry at our church. He knew from our testimony that we had been involved in a similar ministry in the past.
DD: Why did you decide to become part of this ministry?
GL: That’s an interesting question. When my wife Susan and I first came to Cornerstone we knew a recovery program did not exist. Since we had spent over a decade in a previous ministry and had been on a break focusing on raising our teens, we were hoping to fly under the radar. God, however, didn’t want his glory to be hidden under a rock and we began to see that he wanted us to share how he has redeemed our marriage and our lives.
DD: What has God been showing you and/or teaching you through this ministry?
GL: Our previous ministry was different in many ways. I think when you serve in a ministry for a long time you can get complacent. At Cornerstone we have found that we have to continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of The Lord and you don’t always have everything figured out.
DD: What should the people of CBC know about this ministry?
GL: I think the first thing people should know is that it’s OK to come. There is so much negative stigma associated with a recovery program that people can feel like they are being labeled when they come to one. The second thing people should know is that it’s a safe place and that it’s about any type of struggle, not just addictions.
DD: How can others pray for Recovery @ Cornerstone?
GL: People can pray that more people would come, that the leaders would be shining examples of Christ to hurting people, and that God would bless our efforts
Thanks Garry. I hope you’ll consider coming out to Recovery on Thursday nights at 7pm at CBC. I also hope you’ll keep us lifted up in prayer. Don’t forget to join us on February 15th from 7-9 for our Recovery Promotional Event. It’s going to be a great time to celebrate what God is already doing in and through this ministry.
