In this realm of Christian liberty there is one other area where Christians Hipsters are parting ways with their forefathers: politics. While Fundamentalism and Republicanism became dual forces of the same army (The Religious Right) many of the recovering Fundies today are finding a real pull and attraction to liberal Democratic politics.
It was once assumed that you could not be a Christian and vote Democrat, but that has now changed. More young Christians voted for President Barrack Obama in the 2008 election than voted in the entire previous election, and this was fueled by new thoughts about society and politics among the Christian youth. For many young Christians the renewed interest in and awareness of the significance of social justice has placed them squarely in conflict with some of the Republican Party’s policies. Democrats have for years now identified themselves more with social causes. By virtue of this interest, then, many a young Hipster has switched teams from right wing Republicanism to left wing Liberalism. Some have even gone to extremes by embracing a form of democratic communism. We’ll explore the area of politics among hipsters below, but it is without a doubt a hot topic among hipsters today.
Next week we will look at the last hot topic: missions.
