Every weekend I try to share some articles from around the web that interested me or caught my attention, here’s what I found this week:
1. “Oprah Puts Rob Bell on Her Spiritual A-Team” by Derek Rishmawy
My friend Derek gives us three things to consider as we think about Oprah’s endorsement of Bell’s latest book. This is a fair, gracious, and yet honest look at the subject.
2. “Review: Death By Living” by Derek Rishmawy
It must have been Derek appreciation week at The Gospel Coalition, because he had several features this week. Here he reviews a compelling new book by N.D. Wilson. Derek does a great job of promoting this quality work and if Derek likes it then I read it.
3. “27 Male Survivors Quoting the People Who Attacked Them” by Spencer Althouse
The pictures on this slide presentation from BuzzFeed are worth reading for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that we as a culture need to speak honestly about male sexual assault.
4. “The Perils of Doing a PhD: Be Forewarned” by David Fitch
One of the reasons I have not continued to pursue a PhD right now is that the return of investment very small. I worked as an adjunct for five years and while I loved my experiences there, and loved the institution I worked for, I recognize that in many ways colleges and universities are abusing adjuncts because their own financial situations are so tight.
5. “Gospel and Poor” by Eric Geiger
Geiger has a simple and short reflection on the relationship between the gospel and the poor here. A few years ago I wrote a bit larger reflection on the subject, but God continually reminds me of these principles.
6. “Supporting NANC Proposed Name Change” by Bob Kelleman
The director of the Biblical Counseling Coalition offers his support to the NANC name change. I do too, but his opinion carries a bit more weight.
7. “False Love: Overcoming Sexual Sin from Pornography to Adultery” by Brad Hambrick
Everyone writes and talks about the reality of sexual sin, here Hambrick offers us some real steps in fighting against it and overcoming it. This post covers steps 1-3.
8. “The Lord’s Supper” by Peter Gentry
Dr. Gentry here offers some commentary and explanation of the Lord’s Supper as defined in The Southern Baptist Convention’s statement of faith The Baptist Faith and Message. It’s worth reading for all Christians, though, as Dr. Gentry covers six simple yet profound aspects of the Lord’s Supper.
9. “Why We Need Small Towns: How They Correct the Supersized Spirituality of Evangelicals” by Jake Meador
Channeling Rod Dreher, Meador makes an appeal on behalf of the rural and micropolitan communities of America. He asks and answers the question “What happens when our ambitions and fondness for big run amok?”
