What My House Guest Reminded Me Of

This weekend was pretty unusual and a bit annoying. Friday night as I sat in our living room watching TV I saw something moving around in the dinning room. It turned out to be a bat. Somehow a bat had gotten in our house and was now flying around our downstairs. I wasn’t sure what I had seen until Saturday night it made a full appearance swooping over us. I made some attempts to swat it with a tennis racket, while Krista and Mia screamed. Finally I was able to isolate the animal in the dinning room and just tonight we dealt with him.

The whole event was annoying. I really hate bats! But the exeperience did remind me of one important theological truth, the need for Jesus to restore order to His created world. When God made the earth He placed Adam in the Garden of Eden and told him that he was to have dominion over all animals in the sea, on the land, and in the air! Of course the Fall, the sinful disobedience of that first man, disrupted the whole order of creation. The curse, then, which God put on the earth stated that while man would still have dominion over the earth and its creatures, it would not come easily. No longer would the animals and plants willfully submit to their lord, they would have to be forced. The presence of this bat, and the fact that it didn’t obey my commands to leave my house instantly, remind me of the fallen world we are in. Jesus alone can, and one day will, restore peace and order to the created world. And then those creepy little rats with wings won’t pester me anymore!
