This Week’s Good Reads

I had far less time this week to read, but if you’re looking for something good to read? Try one of these selections:

1) “It All Turns On Affection” by Wendell E. Berry

A great lecture by the respected author and conservationist deals with the idea of affection for you community. The piece seeks particularly to address the problem of disconnection between people and land, but it is an encouragement to us all to rethink the importance of land, community, and that which is local. A very worthwhile read! And beyond making me feel like I should buy a farm (a bad idea), it encourages me to love my local community (a great idea).

2) “Out of Egypt, Again and Again” by Richard Chess

Chess talks about how being diagnosed with cancer brought him out of the I/We, Mine/Ours, divide. It is a really beautiful piece that talks about how in the wake of his diagnosis his self-centeredness faded. His cancer was “our cancer.” It’s a beautiful piece that you ought to read for no other reason than to reflect on the importance of community and shared burdens in your own life.

3) “Muscular Christianity” by Michael Horton

This is a great article from a respected theologian pointing out the idiocy and error in the masculine Christian movement that seems to be all the rage these days. I have articulated often my frustration with the machismo of Driscoll and others, Horton gives some solid support to that frustration. Check it out.
