Today we celebrate the founding of our great nation. Actually only two people signed the Declaration of Independence on this day in 1776, it wasn’t until August that the actual signing that we think of happened. Nonetheless it is a great day of celebration for those of us who are American citizens. For those who are interested in the history surrounding this day let me recommend some of my favorites:
Frank Lambert, The Founding Fathers and the Role of Religion in the Founding of America. This book argues for a more historically accurate understanding of the founding of our nation, not as a Christian nation, but as one with a full blown concept of Religious Freedom.
Edmund S. Morgan, The Birth of the Republic. A brief overview and introduction to the War for American Independence. Morgan is one of the most important contributors to modern colonial history and this work is a simple and plain introduction to the subject.
David McCullough, 1776. This book is a popular history of the founding of America, written by one of the most beloved popular historians of our day.
David McCullough, John Adams. An unsung hero in the founding of our nation. In the shadows of Washington and Jefferson Adams gets overlooked, but McCullough does a powerful job of bringing him to life and presenting the man in all his flaws and glory.
Peter Lilliback, George Washington’s Sacred Fire. A gripping discovery of Washington’s faith pulled from his own letters and writings. This work, written by a theological seminary president, contests the assertion made by many that Washington was a non-believer or at best a deist.
